Last year, the staff of the Fort Campbell Retirement Services tried something new. We hosted a Soldiers and Families for Life Week to honor veterans, retirees and their Families.

The event was successful, but veered somewhat from our normal direction for a Retiree Appreciation Day. This year, we are going back to basics and focus specifically on the retiree and their Family members.

Retiree Appreciation Day 2017 will be Sept. 30 at the Soldier Support Center, 2702 Michigan Ave. Doors will open at 8 a.m., with the opening ceremony beginning at 9. The concept for this event will be similar to the Retiree Appreciation Days that we have hosted for the past 10 years, complete with information booths, immunizations and static displays.

The 101st Airborne Band Brass Quartet will play prior to the opening ceremony and also will play the National Anthem. The opening ceremony will feature guest speaker House Rep. Marsha Blackburn, of the Tennessee 7th District of Tennessee which includes Fort Campbell.

In front of the Soldier Support Center you will see static displays provided by units from the 101st Airborne Division and 52nd Ordnance Group (EOD) manned by Soldiers, many of whom have recently returned from deployment. The displays will feature weapons and equipment being used by Soldiers in Afghanistan, Iraq and other operations around the world.

When you enter the Soldier Support Center you will be greeted at the registration tables by members of the Fort Campbell Retired Soldier Council. After registration, you will be able to speak to supporting organizations including the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fort Campbell Historical Society, Defense Finance and Accounting Service, Disabled American Veterans, among others.

Staff from Blanchfield Army Community Hospital will be on hand for a health fair that will provide information about preventive health, diet, height and weight, as well as blood pressure screenings and other valuable advice related to your health. Vaccinations also will be available for retirees and their spouses.

A post dining facility will serve brunch starting at 10:30 a.m. and continuing until 1 p.m. the cost is $6.25, cash only and exact change is appreciated. We strongly recommend you eat at the DFAC so you can see just how far meals have come in the Army from the days of the “chow hall.” All Retiree Appreciation Day, retirees and Family members are invited to dine at the DFAC.

As in the past, there will be opportunities to tour Fort Campbell.

Rather than having the tour at the end of the day, we will have our buses drive specific routes to one of three event locations – the Engagement Skills Trainer, Pratt Museum and unit memorials, and the DFAC. The buses will run 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Please RSVP for the Retiree Appreciation Day by calling 270-798-3174 or by sending an to usarmy.campbell.imcom.atlantic.mbx.dhr-mpsd-retire@ mail.mil so we will know you are attending and to have an accurate headcount for the DFAC.
